After about a year, the material was being worked on again. The large part of the album was written in March 2020 by Joakim and Chris during two weeks long self-quarantine writing sessions in the band's warehouse in Falun, after Sabaton was forced to cancel their 2021 tour in Russia due to COVID-19 outbreak.The stories that the band didn't hear about before writing this album: White Friday ( Soldier of Heaven) and Milunka Savić.When The Great War was released, the band was aware that they couldn't fit every story from World War I on a single album and even though they wanted to include some stories, they didn't have the right music for them.

Sabaton received many e-mails from fans about the World War I stories they didn't include on The Great War album that inspired the lyrics on this album.

The band didn't plan to make a second album about World War I from the start but rather grew into that idea during the work.

The album was created because the band couldn't tour due to COVID-19, Christmas Truce along with some other singles were at first planned to support The Great War album.

On the album was officially made available for pre-order on Nuclear Blast Shop.

The artwork for the album was previously revealed with the album's tour The Tour to End All Tours on.

The album was announced on in a video.The band's second album about World War I.
